Just a thought

I think that we should always spend time working on something that we enjoy doing. That thing might not be a part your usual routine, not even something that has any monetary benefit, but just a thing that you love doing. We should regularly give time to something that we love. If you haven’t found that love, learn a new skill and try to get past the beginner’s level. Who knows, you might end up developing that newly found hobby and doing something fantastic. :)

Which two are you?

“I divide my officers into four classes; the clever, the lazy, the industrious, and the stupid. Each officer possesses at least two of these qualities. Those who are clever and industrious are fitted for the highest staff appointments. Use can be made of those who are stupid and lazy. The man who is clever and lazy however is for the very highest command; he has the temperament and nerves to deal with all situations. But whoever is stupid and industrious is a menace and must be removed immediately!”

— General Kurt von Hammerstein-Equord

Business Intelligence and Data Discovery

Now-a-days, my interest in the world of computing has shifted to Data Discovery and Business Intelligence. I have reading a lot of articles, services and Quora posts regarding it and I’m genuinely intrigued by the vast possibility from this domain. I’m planning to do a major project on it as a part of my 8th semester so I’m exploring works done by other people and looking for ideas to work on. If my work can contribute to anyone in any way, then why not! Let me know if you have something to share with me regarding this.

3 months!

Wooahh! Its been more than 3 months since I updated my precious blog. But, I am happy to see that it still gets some fifty-ish visits everyday. Even though sometimes I get tied up with work, I occasionally come here to check comments or feedback from my readers. Feel free to write to me.

Once again, a lot has changed in my life in the past 3 months. I’m almost finished applying for my masters program to US/Canadian universities, completed my mini-project – “Text-based Dialogue System using Ontology”, left my beloved college – IIITA after 3 years and started my internship at Microsoft Innovation Center, Nepal. I plan to write in detail about each of them in coming weeks. And please do encourage me to write on them; I tend to get lazy sometimes and yes, of course my busy schedule. I have made fantastic friends in MIC Nepal and I am really enjoying my time there. To my surprise, it didn’t take long for me to adjust to the new environment (10am to 5pm DUH). Let me write on this sometime soon.

I was itching to write sometime on my blog tonight even though I’m currently having a severe headache. So, writing starts tomorrow.

Happy 50k!

It has been almost 3 years since I started this blog, Jan 2010 to be exact. Since then I have written about my works, projects and sometimes very random stuffs. The initial stages were actually an experimental phase and I was writing on various topics on my web knowledge, football and what not. But lately, if you have noticed, I have been posted only about my recent works and I’m planning to keep it that way. But yes, occasionally you will find some random stuff here like quotes and pics.

Today I am ecstatic to share that this blog has been visited more than 50,000 times from over 120+ countries. To get that many hits for a personal blog is really overwhelming. I am also very happy to know that people are finding useful information here and they are helping them in their own projects. I’ll try to find time to update my old projects according to some demanding requests. :)

Busy with GRE these days so I have not posted anything for a while. I’ll post some useful info. once I am done with my test.

Date Extractor using lex and yacc

I have been fiddling with lex and yacc since my last semester course – Compiler Design. I even posted an assignment  here where we built a SQL Syntax Checker.

This semester, I opted for Information Retrieval as one of my Elective. Its an awesome subject so far even though I’m unaware of half the things taught in class! :\

Anyway, our first assignment was to build a program that would extract different formats of date from a file. I used lex and yacc to build the program. The program extracts date in various formats including dates with delimiters and words. You can check the complete code here in github. Its a small but certainly a powerful program. If you want any help in the code, you can always ping me. :)

“When I got the Standard 12, I thought I should pursue Engineering. Once I had made the decision to do Engineering, I checked out what marks I needed to get in. I found out with “x” percentage I would get in. So that became my target and whether I came first or last in class was unimportant.”

My First Paper Published

I know its quite late to post this now as we got the confirmation of our paper’s acceptance more than four months back.

The paper was about Graph Database that we completed in our fifth semester as a mini-project. Though not a complete NoSQL Graph Database, the one we built had the basic functionalities like adding, deleting, appending nodes/edges. The database had a built-in cache for faster interaction with nodes/edges and most importantly, search.

The paper was published at ICSCA 2012 (International Conference on Software and Computer Applications) held in Singapore.

UPDATE: Link for the paper.

“You will never be happy if you only work for your personal benefit and not give to anybody else. Remember you are sent to this world by God, so apart from the fact that you must justify your existence to him, you have an obligation everyday to try and make somebody else’s life worthwhile.”
